Mathematics Course Offerings
Three credits in Mathematics are required for graduation in District 70. Course work in algebra and geometry are required.
Pre-Algebratop
Grade 9 .5 credit 1 Trimester
Prerequisite: None
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 5, 6
The emphasis of Pre-Algebra is the real number system and all its subsets. Students will review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of rational numbers. Also, students will be introduced to basic Algebra concepts such as equation solving. Problem-solving techniques will also be stressed.
Algebra 1top
Grade 9-12 1.5 credit 3 Trimesters
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and appropriate score on readiness test
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 6
Algebra 1 is the foundation for all higher level mathematics. Its main emphasis is to solve, graph and problem-solve with linear and quadratic equations, as well as factoring. Those students receiving a D or lower after the first trimester will be placed in Pre-Algebra. (If a student has already passed Pre-Algebra, then the student will be placed in Transitional Geometry.)
Transitional Geometrytop
Grade 10-12 1 credit 2 Trimesters
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 with a D (or better) grade
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
This course meets NCAA requirements as well as District 70's for course work in geometry. For those not wishing to pursue traditional Geometry, this course presents another option.
Geometrytop
Grade 10-12(9 if passed 8th grade algebra) 1 credit 2 Trimesters
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 with a C or better grade, teacher recommendation and appropriate score on readiness test
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
This course is a study of the properties of geometric figures. Inductive and deductive thinking skills are used in problem-solving. Applications to the real world are presented with each lesson.
Algebra 2top
Grade 10-12 1 credit 2 Trimesters
Prerequisite: Transitional Geometry with a B or better grade or Geometry with a C or better grade
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 4, 6
This course builds upon the Algebra skills of the student and increases those skills so students will be prepared for post-secondary mathematics. (TI-83 calculators are available for in-class use. Students are encouraged to get one of their own to use.)
Trigonometrytop
Grade 10-12 .5 credit 1 Trimester
Prerequisite: Algebra 2 (recommended B or higher grade)
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 4, 6
This course builds upon the algebra and geometry skills of the students. This class uses graphing calculators (TI-83 calculators are available for in-class use. Students are encouraged to get one of their own to use).
Pre-Calculustop
Grade 10-12 1 credit 2 Trimesters
Prerequisite: Trigonometry with a C or better grade
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 6
This is a course designed for those students who plan on continuing the study of math and/or science in college, or to pursue a career that requires calculus such as law, medicine, engineering, etc. Students may expect a minimum of 30-40 minutes per day of study time. This class uses graphing calculators (TI-83 calculators are available for in-class use. Students are encouraged to get one of their own to use).
Advanced Placement Calculustop
Grade 11-12 1 credit 2 Trimesters (a 3rd trimester offered to prepare for A.P. exam.)
Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus with a C or better grade
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 2, 3, 5, 6
This is an intense mathematics course that deals with limits and the differentiation and integration of functions of one or more variables. Students must be prepared to spend whatever time and energy is required to understand the material. This class uses graphing calculators (TI-83 calculators are available for in-class use. Students are encouraged to get one of their own to use).
Computer Programmingtop
Grade 10-12 .5 credit 1 Trimester
Prerequisite: Geometry and Keyboarding
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 2, 3 ,4 ,5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 2, 6
This class is a beginning computer programming course. The student will be introduced to the basic structures of programming Students will write programs that will emphasize logic and specific math concepts.
Consumer Mathtop
Grade 10-12 1 credit 2 Trimesters
Prerequisite: None
Standards Addressed: Mathematics 1, 3, 5, 6
Standards Emphasized: Mathematics 1, 3, 6
Students will investigate many of the applications of mathematics to real life situations. Some of the topics included are banking, credit, taxes, insurance, and investments. Students will be exposed to budgeting, buying a house or renting an apartment, and buying a car. Some statistics which apply to the consumer
will be studied.
